Programs and Curriculum
|
Curriculum, educational programs
and lesson plans are the heart of your home school.
With the increase in popularity in recent years of
home schooling, the curriculum, programs and lesson
plans that are available are also on the rise - your
choices as a home schooling teacher now range from complete,
pre-packaged curriculum to state-sponsored programs
and lesson plans with heavy interaction and optional
instruction by local teachers. In order to sort through
all of the curriculum choices, you'll need to evaluate
each program on its own merits, and decide which best
suits your family.

Home Schooling Curriculum - Setting
Flexible Standards
An advantage to home schooling curriculum
flexibility is that you don't have to
worry about sick days or missed lesson
plans or days spent out of the house
at the beach or the park - in short,
due to your flexible curriculum, there
is a lot less guilt that accompanies
home schooling. A sick child may be
allowed to recover as needed from an
illness - then catch up on missed lesson
plans, while a quick excursion to the
beach or the park can be filed under
"weather exploration" or "tide
observation." |
Home
School Programs - A Wide Variety of
Choices
Home schooling programs are both plentiful
and - for the most part - relatively
inexpensive. Part of the reason for
the increase in variety of available
homeschooling programs is economic -
commercial school curriculum companies
have found that there is a rapidly expanding
home school market in the world today
for their programs and lesson plans,
from full courses of study to simple
homeschool templates. |
Used
Home School Curriculum - Where to Find
It
From a course syllabus to hardly-used
textbooks, someone is selling what you
need somewhere. Used educational materials
are for sale all over the internet,
on E-bay and various auction sites.
You can search for specific used curriculum
by titles or by topics, such as "Homeschooling,"
"software" or "educational."

Is
Your Home School Accredited?
Accreditation generally works in this
fashion - an accrediting agency would
have the final say on determining approved
curriculum, establishing a standard
of hours required for independent study
and setting performance standards for
passing a particular subject. These
agencies would also likely maintain
educational records, issue diplomas
and transcripts and assist parents in
setting up an appropriate study environment
for their home school. |
Lesson
Plans: The Beaten Path and Getting Off
of it
Let your lesson plans run a little wild.
Home economics can be done in the kitchen.
Physical education can be done outside
on the lawn. Psychology can be talked
about and is a great theme for "Movie
Time". Building a birdhouse or
a Lego mansion is not only great for
your Art lesson, but is an opportunity
to measure and weigh. Transfer those
numbers into the metric system. Your
lesson plan can instruct and educate
in any manner you choose. |
